How old are you is a common question when new friends meet, but then between true friends, age matters not. I think the more important information is something that cannot be asked nor answered but must be observed over time to know and that is what kind of person are you. Age has little bearing on the quality of your character, other then older people tend to have more patience and live a relaxed life style because after some years of running around chasing their tails, they have learned that it is far better to sit under the apple tree then run down to the bar for a rum drink.
Comparisons of living styles between the USA and Latin America are often made by those who have moved from one location to the other. I moved from the middle class comfortable lifestyle of California to Costa Rica in 1991. At first I was distressed because many of the things I had become accustomed to were not readily available: quality vitamins, books, libraries, inexpensive cars, good roads and secure neighborhoods.
The western countries are all in deep financial crisis. The banks are full of cash but the people have none. Governments, companies and people have debt to the banks who are not forgiving. Bankers are earning unprecedented bonuses while more and more citizens go jobless homeless and hungry. Politicians have no love for citizens and respond only to their masters - the bankers.
I was reading today how in Los Angeles a few days ago the FDA and LA Police department arrested three people on conspiracy and other charges because they sell raw unpastuerized milk and cheese. Unbelievable. I can only imagine that someone does not want the people to have access to healthy foods. Thank goodness here in Costa Rica we have lots of natural milk and cheese and eggs and meats as close as the farm next door. I do not drink milk, but I love the home made cheese I buy from Miyela who hand milks her cow every morning and makes fresh raw cheese that I buy in the afternoon !
I have lived in Costa Rica for most of the past 20 years. Sure there are lots of problems with this country and we expats are always talking about where is the best place to live out our lives in peace and comfort. We discuss the nearby countries like Panama and Nicaragua, Ecuador and Peru, and faraway romantic spots like Thailand and India, even hong kong or China. But when it comes right down to it, there is no better spot on the planet today then Costa Rica. For one thing, all countries have their share of problems, corruptions, overpriced items and screwed up people.

Tomorrow we will learn the truth of today. If only we could know today that truth which will be revealed after the passing of time, but truth is always clouded to protect the thieves in high places.
Now that we have a new US President elect we expect to be saved from the madness of the previous administration. From all the destructive and fraudulent wars, the bankrupt federal government, the emerging police state, and the spiraling inflation which is quickly destroying the good life.
To be healthy is not only a state of physical health, but one of character, of attitude, a devotion to Right Choices. Health arrives not in the form of a pill or potion, but on the wings of fortitude. Real health today is a struggle to live the Right Life in a Sick World. Most products advertised are unhealthy. McDonald's and Burger King food will steal years off your life. Prozac brings new addictions to an already depressed mind. Sugar burns you out and coke burns you up.
Costa Rica has been called the jewel of Central America, certainly for the rich it is, as they have benefited handsomely over the last 10 years from the increased tourism and technology export sectors. But the average person has tightened his belt in the same period as increased taxations, fuel costs, government red tape and other burdens of corruption and greed have increased the cost of basic food, clothing and transportation for these otherwise gentle people.
When i meet new people and tell them I live in Costa Rica, they invariably ask me, "But why did you choose to live in Costa Rica, of all the countries of the world?" To which I have my pat answer:
"The weather is excellent, perhaps a bit too rainy, the women are beautiful and sexy, the land is inexpensive, and the beaches are untouched ..."
This answer is no longer completely valid as the beaches are being overrun by foriegners with too much money to throw away and the land is no longer inexpensive anywhere in Costa Rica. But the women are still sexy and beautiful.
